Children's Literature
H. A. Rey is the author of the popular Curious George books. He started out as an artist and after college found work as an illustrator. Once again, in this "Children's Authors" series, Cari Meister has presented the author in a clear and readable way. The reader learns that H. A. Rey was born in Germany with the name of Hans Augusto Reyersbach. He moved to Brazil, became a salesman and met his wife Margret, also an artist. They began an advertising company, then moved to France and worked together on a children's book. The first book was Raffy and the Nine Monkeys. Rey was also working on a Curious George book. When the Reys moved to New York, H. A. Rey found a publisher for his George book. Other Curious George books followedΒΎseven in total. Curious George became so popular with children that stuffed animals were sold. Today, the George books are still in print and continue to sell well. Both Reys are gone, but a manuscript was found after their death. The book, called Whiteblack the Penguin Sees the World, was published in September 2000. Illustrations for the "Children's Authors" series are in black-and-white and color. 2001, ABDO, $19.92. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Della A. YannuzziBook Details
