This basic introduction to hamster care focuses primarily on practical information for new pet owners. It also touches on the links between hamsters' natural behaviors and appropriate pet care; for example, hamsters are primarily nocturnal animals that may dislike being played with during the day. Illustrations include color photographs of hamsters, both alone and interacting with children. A large color photo also shows a complete cage setup with all the elements labeled. In addition, watercolor paintings of hamsters effectively illustrate hamster behaviors, but are not detailed enough to allow readers to adequately differentiate among the various hamster breeds. Sections include discussions of safety concerns, grooming, handling, and visits to the vet. Highlighted sidebars include important reference information and helpful lists, including one of harmful foods. There is also a series of questions to help young readers and their families decide if a hamster is an appropriate pet. Although this guidebook is not as in-depth as owners' manuals aimed at adults, it is a pleasant introduction to these popular classroom pets. An index and a somewhat limited glossary are appended. Part of the "Pet Care" series. 2004, Crabtree Publishing Company, Ages 8 to 12.βNorah Piehl
