Wow! It is Maisy's birthday. She gets cards in the mail, and kids can pull the tab to cause a cascade of envelopes to pass through the front door's mail slot. Then, they get to open one and see that it is a card from Lucky Ducky. (Buyer, beware: Since the card comes out of the envelope, it may have a short lifespan). Next, Maisy gets dressed for her party. Her friends arrive and offer their presents. What would a party be without games and a spread of wonderful treats? Maisy blows out the candles on her cake as her friends sing. The adjoining page contains the words to the song, which may encourage caregivers and kids to sing along. All too soon the party is over. Each page offers something to lift or pull, and the pages are sturdy enough that they should hold up to plenty of abuse. Also in the "Maisy Lift-the-Flap Classic" series are Maisy at the Farm, Maisy Goes to School, Maisy Goes to the Playground, and Maisy's ABC. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS-Gr 1-These lift-the-flap, pull-the-tab books featuring the lovable mouse will surely fly off shelves. Happy Birthday shows Maisy on her special day, receiving cards (note: an envelope opens to reveal a small loose card), dressing for a party, playing games, and enjoying cake. Maisy at the Farm sets the mouse in motion as she rides a horse, drives a tractor, cleans the pigsty, and feeds baby lambs (the milk level in the bottle goes down with the pull of a tab). In both titles, simple illustrations done in primary colors with heavy black outlines add to the appeal. Good for storyhours.-DeAnn Tabuchi, San Anselmo Public Library, CA

Toddlers can gleefully participate in the festivities in this Maisy (Maisy Goes to Bed, 1990, etc.) adventure. Simple verse details the rituals surrounding a birthday; onlookers see Maisy receive cards in the mail, dress in her special outfit, play hide-and-seek, and, of course, enjoy a boisterous rendition of "Happy Birthday." Incorporating the lyrics of the song into the text encourages children to sing the familiar tune while "reading" the story. Cousins's signature style is in full effect; bold colors leap off the white backgrounds, while sturdy pages with easily manipulated pull-tabs and flaps make this party toddler-proof. A merry little tale that celebrates children's universal love of birthdays. (Picture book. 2-4)
