Synopsis

In Spot Sleeps Over, Steve the Monkey is having a sleepover party, and Spot packs everything in sight—except that he forgets his favorite Teddy. Luckily Mom arrives from next door just as Spot is getting into bed, and saves the evening. Full of funny lift-the-flaps, children can see Spot at his rambunctious best.

Publishers Weekly

Spot ventures forth into the world in another engaging story about the ever-energetic puppy. This lift-the-flap book, which contains Hill's trademark bold drawings, features the popular pooch as he goes on a sleep-over adventure at the home of his friend Steve the monkey. Spot is so excited that he packs almost all of his possessions, and with a bulging suitcase, a wagonload of toys and his bedroll sets off for his trip--next door. While the two have a happy time playing, the puppy's mother brings over a bag for Spot. At bedtime, Spot is evasive when Steve asks about the contents of his bag, but the final flap reveals the puppy's teddy bear nestled in his arms. As thoughtful mom comes through in the end, this story will hit home for children and adults alike who have faced the universal situation of discovering that a beloved object has been left behind. Ages 1-5. (Sept.)

School Library Journal

PreS-K-- Spot is spending the night at his friend's house. Packing and unpacking the needed items, playing, and eventually sleeping are presented in Hill's typical lift-the-flap style. Spot is swinging on a tree, lift the flap and he's slipped out and is walking towards his mother who has brought him something. Lift the last flap and children see that Mom has brought Spot's teddy bear. The bright watercolors and simple story line will appeal to preschoolers, while the large type and simple vocabulary may entice beginning readers. No surprises here, but in this case that's just fine. --Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library
