This is a comprehensive, reference-type volume devoted exclusively to headaches. The scientific foundations, diagnosis, and management of headaches are included. The editors hope that readers will make use of the knowledge contained in this book to help their patients. Their intent is to show that headache is a core discipline of neurology and that this book should be a stimulus to develop better service for headache patients. They also want to produce a volume that satisfies the needs of physicians all over the world. These are worthy objectives and I feel the editors have definitely met them. This book is written for clinicians who treat patients with headaches. Since headache is a very common clinical presentation and physicians across a spectrum of specialties come into contact with such patients, I feel this book is a very useful tool for all physicians in practice and in training. The editors have employed the philosophy of shared authorship for most of the chapters -- many of the chapters are written by contributors who are experts in their respective fields, from different centers in different countries. I think this international perspective is the best feature of the book. The editors and the contributors are credible authorities in the subject matter covered. Headache is a very common disorder in clinical practice. The causes of headache are myriad and the clinical presentations diverse. This makes the etiologic diagnosis and specific management of each patient's headache complex. Coupled with this are the tremendous advances being made in the field of diagnosis and management. Headache research is progressing at an incredible pace; all over the world, new methods ofinvestigation and new drugs are being discovered very rapidly. This book is a single volume discussion of the scientific foundations, clinical presentation, diagnoses, and management of patients with headaches. The most recent information is included. The diagrams and pictures are very illustrative and well labeled, and the graphs and tables are very informative. This is an invaluable, comprehensive reference volume for physicians who encounter patients with headaches. The editors provide insight into the scientific foundations of various causes of headaches and discuss the diagnosis and management of patients with headaches. This, coupled with the use of the most up-to-date information in diagnosis and management, helps readers learn both the art and science of headache management. This second edition is justified, considering the incredible pace at which headache research has been progressing universally.

From The Critics

Reviewer: Jennifer S. Kriegler, MD(Cleveland Clinic Foundation)
Description: The third edition of The Headaches, a comprehensive book that discusses all aspects of headache, has been extensively revised since the previous edition, published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to be the "ultimate source for clinicians and scientists with an interest in headache." The authors have met this lofty and noble objective.
Audience: Directed at scientists and clinicians with a primary interest in headache mechanisms and management, this is a major tome which is extensive in both breadth and depth. The authors are internationally respected in their field.
Features: Seven basic sections comprise the book: general aspects of headache, basic science, migraine, other primary headache disorders, secondary headache disorders, headaches in children and adolescents, and special problems in headaches and their management. The chapters on migraine mechanisms are comprehensive and current and extremely well done. The greatest shortcoming is the lack of illustrations and images, especially in chapters that lend themselves to visual images such as those on migraine with aura.
Assessment: This book is outstanding. All the information is current which makes the second edition obsolete. It is the most comprehensive book on headache available.

This book consists of 125 chapters divided into six parts: (1) history, classification, and general background of headaches; (2) anatomy, physiology, psychology, and pharmacology; (3) migraine; (4) tension-type, cluster, and miscellaneous headaches; (5) secondary headaches; and (6) special management problems. The 93 contributors represent an international collection of experts, mostly academic neurologists, all of whom are scientifically active within the topics on which they write. The authors' stated aim is ""to include in one volume the scientific foundations, the diagnosis, and the management of all headaches."" There is no other work that attempts such a colossal objective, nor is it likely that one will come as close to achieving the stated aims as this one does. The authors do not state a target audience. The likely beneficiaries of this work are neurologists, from the student to the expert, as well as clinicians with an interest in treating patients with headaches. The excellent features begin with a table of contents, useful by itself as an overview to an organized approach on the general topic of headaches. The index is comprehensive and functional. References are extensive and up-to-date. There are extensive monochrome line drawings in addition to tables, charts, and occasional radiograph reproductions. The typesetting is highly readable. In the past few months there has been a flurry of new books and new editions of older references all on the topic of headache. Clearly, the cause of this publishing blizzard is a new understanding of mechanisms of head pain, established on rapidly unfolding developments in molecular biology and molecular pharmacology. This book is anencyclopedia of headache, based on the classification of headaches generated by the International Headache Society in 1985, that attempts to apply this new information to a common clinical complaint. The rigor of science sometimes obscures the clinical wisdom that is equally important to understanding headaches, but it is the scientific information that is the value of this book. This work is an admirable achievement in organizing an intellectual approach to headaches and presenting a coherent and swiftly evolving body of knowledge. The contribution of this book cannot be overstated. It will take its place as the new primary reference on headaches.

Headache has always been important clinically, but only within the last decade has a body of solid research-based evidence grown enough to justify a comprehensive reference such as this devoted to the scientific foundations, the diagnosis, and the management of all headaches. The 125 internationally-contributed chapters are arranged in six parts: background to the headaches; applied anatomy, physiology, psychology, and pharmacology; migraine; tension-type headache, cluster headache, and miscellaneous headaches; the secondary headaches; and special management problems in the headaches. Each chapter is based on a critical evaluation of the literature and all contributors have been scientifically active within the topics that they cover. Annotation c.
