Health assessment is presented as a ""conceptual foundation"" for professional nursing practice in this third edition book. Previous editions were published in 1990 and 1994. The purpose is to teach health assessment from a conceptual framework and to outline the scope and responsibilities according to the domains of nursing. The audience is student nurses and professional nurses who need to review health assessment. The authors begin with an overview of foundational concepts of physical assessment. Functional health patterns are followed by special situations in health assessment. Just two examples of the latter are infant-adolescent health assessment and assessment of the client with a chemical dependency problem. Key features include clinical relevance, data collection methods, and application of the nursing process. A shortcoming is that there is only one chapter on pediatrics. Also, references are more than four years old, and there are few that represent research-based literature. This book is a concise view of the physical exam and a reinforcement of the nursing process. There are several physical examination books, but few include the conceptual framework and the functional patterns of health the way this one does. However, there is no inclusion of Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). These uniform languages are an integral part of nursing documentation today. Although a physical examination book would not have much about these two parts of the nursing process, they should be mentioned since the authors stress use of the nursing process as a strength of their book. There is no clear explanation of the ""changes"" to be found inthis edition. References are old, most from 1996 or earlier, and they are not evidenced based references. This book has little information on pediatric health assessment, but appears to be a generally sound general physical assessment text.Booknews
This textbook provides a nursing model for health assessment. It uses the frameworks of functional health and nursing diagnoses, while at the same time incorporating traditional physical examination techniques. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)From The Critics
