Children's Literature
All the books in the "My Five Senses" series, including Hearing, are attractive and full of visually arresting images. Most of the information, such as the different sounds a person can hear, is presented in lists. The format in which facts are presented, the large-print, and the colorful accompanying photographs make this book very reader-friendly. Hidalgo is adept at conveying complex ideas in a simple way. She touches upon the way hearing facilitates communication and the way the brain interprets sounds received through the ears but for the most part, the text is intended to be more introductory than informative. There are assorted facts about the ways some insects, animals, and human beings hear, so while most of the information is fairly rudimentary, there are still amusing facts for older readers. There are sections on vocabulary and further reading as well as an activities page involving balloons that children may find entertaining. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 4 to 6.β Rihoko Ueno
