Synopsis

You're trying to reach Grandma to wish her a happy birthday and whoops, you dial the wrong number. Who might you get on the phone instead? Lift the flaps & see—you might reach a sheep, or a duck, or a cow, even a cranky crocodile. Children ages 3-7 will love the riot of wrong numbers & what is behind the flaps.

Children's Literature

Ian Whybrow writes a playful lift-the-flap book about a boy named Logan who makes several attempts to call his grandmother to wish her a happy birthday. This telephone etiquette story teaches telephone manners through a charming narrative that will entertain and engage young readers. There are full-page flaps on most spreads that allow young readers to participate by lifting to reveal the character who answers Logan's call. Each time, Logan reaches a different animal instead of his grandmother. Each animal professes to be too busy to talk, but the bold playful illustrations invite children to extend the meaning of the plot by showing that each animal is making a gift for Logan's grandmother (except for a cranky crocodile). Throughout this story Whybrow experiments with language and word sounds in a way that encourages children to participate and delight in the story. The tale ends with a party for grandma that is attended by the animals, Logan, and his mother. Reviewer: L. A. Gallaway
