Book 3 in the popular "Little Wolf" series is presented, like the others, in a series of letters penned to Mom and Dad by Little Wolf. He tells how he, Yeller Wolf, and his little brother, Smellybref, are trying to run the scariest school in the world. Uncle BigBad makes an appearance, and Little takes an overlong and dangerous (to the story, at least) journey, but committed fans won't mind at all. By the end, the wolf group has formed a woodland detective agency, which promises even more adventures cleverly told. It's sure to have readers snickering over Little's creative spelling, his candor concerning his feelings for his little brother and the scrapes they get into, and his Tom-Swifty signoffs ("headscratchingly yours"). 2000 (orig. 1998), Carolrhoda, $12.95. Ages 7 to 10. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
