Gr 7 Up More than just a presentation of a variety of diseases, the book begins with a short but thorough discussion of genetics and heredity that would serve as a good introduction to the topic for anyone. Mendel's life and work is out lined, followed by a discussion of hu man reproduction, cell division, and genes. Gene mutations, defective genes, and types of genetic inheritance are examined, followed by a look at the role and function of genetic counseling. Four diseases are examined in detail: cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia, Tay- Sachs disease, and diabetes. A brief discussion of current research and pos sible scenarios in genetic engineering concludes the text, presenting medical possibilities and ethical considerations. The book is well written, in an appro priate, readable style, incorporating case studies for each disease to bring the message home more clearly. Black- and-white drawings, diagrams, and photographs illustrate the text. A short bibliography includes a list of the names and addresses for the major foundations for each disease.
