Gr 3-6 A poster-perfect cover is all that can be recommended about this book. Dark, depressing black-and-white photographs do nothing to enhance or extend the text, or even inspire readers to turn the page. Skimpy chapters cover breeds, choosing your first horse, care and health, and not much else. Better choices are Anderson's Complete Book of Horses and Horsemanship (Macmillan, 1963; o.p.), The British Horse Society and Pony Club's The Manual of Horsemanship (Barron's, 1976; o.p.), Self's Complete Book of Horses & Ponies (McGraw-Hill, 1963; o.p.), and Horses, Their Selection Care and Handling (Arco, 1943; o.p.).
