Overview

High-Yield™ Brain and Behavior is the fourth volume in the High-Yield™ Systems Series, which covers the basic sciences of the medical school curriculum using a systems-based approach. This book is the only review book to cover the combined material from neuroscience and behavioral science courses in an outline format with a focus on the USMLE Step 1.

Chapters cover each basic science—embryology, gross anatomy, radiology, histology, physiology, pathology, microbiology, and pharmacology—as it relates to the nervous system. Patient snapshots provide concise descriptions of classic clinical cases. Tables help students memorize large amounts of information, and figures provide detailed visual cues.

Reviewer:William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This book, one in the High Yield series of review books for medical students, covers neuroscience and behavioral science.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a systems-approach review of neuroscience and behavioral science for medical students studying for the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1. These are worthy objectives, and the authors certainly meet them.
Audience:Although the book is targeted at medical students studying for USMLE Step 1, anyone wishing to review the neurosciences would find it quite useful, including residents, nurses, and psychologists.
Features:The book is divided into four sections. Section 1 covers the development of the nervous system throughout life and the disorders associated with various life stages. Section 2 offers a superb review of adult neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. The third and fourth sections deal with variations in normal human behavior; i.e., neurological and psychiatric disorders and their treatments. Many excellent black-and-white illustrations and photographs, as well as numerous tables, are scattered throughout. No references are cited, but there is a thorough index.
Assessment:Simply stated, this is the best review book of the preclinical neurosciences I have seen. It is well organized, incredibly thorough, and should more than adequately prepare medical students for questions on USMLE Step 1 dealing with the neurosciences. In fact, this book is so comprehensive that anyone (not just medical students) wishing for a good review and reference on the neurosciences should consider purchasing a copy.
