Reviewer:William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This is one in a series of review books designed to prepare medical students for the USMLE Step 1. This particular book reviews psychiatry and behavioral science.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide medical students with a concise review of behavioral science in order to prepare them for the USMLE Step 1.
Audience:The book is especially targeted for medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1. However, given the book's thoroughness and conciseness, anyone who wants a quick review of psychiatry and behavioral science may find it worthwhile.
Features:The book offers a concise review of numerous subjects related to behavioral medicine including developmental psychology, learning theory, DSM-IV-oriented psychopathology, and human sexuality. It also offers a quick and easy-to-understand review of epidemiology and statistics. There are no illustrations, but none are needed. There are, however, numerous tables and some graphs. Case vignettes add to the book's thoroughness, and help readers apply the content in a clinical setting. An excellent glossary and index are found at the end.
Assessment:This book accomplishes exactly what it set out to do: offer a thorough yet concise review of behavioral science for medical students studying for the USMLE Step 1. Although numerous review books are available, this one is above average due to its size, thoroughness, and ease of reading. This book probably should not be limited to medical students; any clinician wanting a quick review of psychiatry may find it useful reading.
