Editorials

Reviewer: Valerie E Mathis-Allen, MD(Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services)
Description: This book is designed to provide medical students with concise, clear presentations of topics commonly tested on the USMLE step 1. It uses a "Patient Snapshot" feature icon that describes scenarios and asks questions on pertinent clinical topics and disorders with the answers and explanations provided at the end of each chapter. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students prepare for step 1 of the USMLE.
Audience: Although intended for medical students, this book could be helpful for residents and any practitioners interested in a quick, easy-to-understand overview of psychiatric topics.
Features: The book covers developmental psychology, learning theory, psychopathology, sleep, substance-related disorders, human sexuality, social behavior, physician-patient relationships, healthcare delivery, medical ethics, epidemiology, and statistics. It is written in an outline format with many easy-to-understand tables. The best features are the short chapters with clear, concise presentations of information as well as the use of the "Patient Snapshots" to provide memorable scenarios and pose specific questions about relevant topics and disorders. The only shortcomings are the unappealing cover and the lack of color in the book.
Assessment: This is a goldmine of information. While it is written for the medical students, it is a valuable quick review for any practitioner interested in psychiatric topics. It reviews, clarifies, illustrates, and explains difficult concepts with interesting patient scenarios, tables, and questions and answers.
