Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Sheila Lahijani, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: With a well-organized and easily accessible format, this book reviews the main concepts of behavioral science with a particular focus on high yield topics. Each chapter delineates major subjects and integrates them as a quick reference guide for an efficient review. Written by a resident physician, it targets areas that are typically on examinations.
Purpose: This book is designed to help medical students identify and recall major areas of behavioral science. It is to be used as a reference or a supplement to primary textbooks and is ideal as a pocket guide.
Audience: While this book may be used by students at all levels, it is ideal for those rotating on a psychiatry clerkship and preparing for USMLE. It is best used after adequate studying and preparation as a quick reference.
Features: It is divided into three sections on human development and psychology; psychiatric disorders and treatment; and ethics, health care, and statistics. The chapters are divided into topics and organized into columns for quick study and recall. Of note, chapters end with clinical vignettes that demonstrate the application of the material just covered. Tables dispersed throughout the book cover broad areas.
Assessment: Overall, this is a fairly comprehensive review, clearly organized. It is especially useful for those preparing for a board exam after they have studied for a period of time and need a reference tool for recall. It is a review, so obviously it is not to be used as a primary textbook. Its ease of use and design set it apart from other books covering individual subjects.
