Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)Description: This softcover book offers a review of the behavioral sciences for all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE).
Purpose: The purpose is to help medical students recall information they have learned in the first two years of medical school in behavioral science, psychiatry, epidemiology, and related courses. These are certainly worthy objectives, since this is a rapidly evolving field. Therefore, this new edition is welcomed.
Audience: The book is specifically targeted to medical students studying for the USMLE and is written at a level appropriate for them.
Features: The book contains nine sections divided into 26 chapters. Each chapter begins with a "Typical Board Question," designed to serve as an example of the way that particular chapter subject matter might be tested on the USMLE. There are a total of 566 USMLE-style questions, covering practically every aspect of behavioral science and psychiatry. Detailed explanations of the answers are provided at the end of each chapter. There are numerous tables scattered throughout to help the student grasp certain concepts. No references are provided. A detailed index is found at the back.
Assessment: "There are numerous review books available for the USMLE. The Board Review Series has always been one of the best, and this new edition solidifies that fact. This fourth edition contains approximately 20 percent more questions than the previous edition. The questions are up-to-date and written in the USMLE style in order to prepare the student for this type of question. This book would certainly prepare medical students for the behavioral science portions of the USMLE. "
