Overview

Lecture Notes on Psychiatry is a concise book that stresses the clinical approach while also providing the essential background knowledge required for a thorough grounding in evidence-based psychiatry. Although the book is aimed primarily at medical students, anyone wanting a lucid account of the principles of psychiatric practice will find the book a fount of wisdom. It has been written by a team of experienced teachers and thoroughly reviewed by a general practitioner to ensure that the book is relevant to the modern medical curriculum.

The book approaches psychiatry as part of medical practice both within the community and within the hospital setting. A unique chapter on the clinical appraisal of a patient's mental state is followed by clear accounts of the important disorders, their causes and their treatment. It provides a balanced, evidence-based approach, integrating the three essential elements of psychiatry: biology, psychology and sociology.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Nancy Schell, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This is an updated eighth edition providing a comprehensive overview of psychiatry in a concise format for medical students.
Purpose: It aims to make psychiatry logical and enjoyable and to ensure passage of the end of course exam. The authors hope to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to all doctors.
Audience: The intended audience is medical students.
Features: The authors try to demonstrate why psychiatry is worth studying as well as to provide a practical model for students on how to start and how to do assessments, make a diagnosis, plan management, and communicate the information. Treatment and causes are explored in a general way in two chapters and specifically with each major adult disorder. Finally, psychiatric issues in non-psychiatric settings are examined. This book is very well organized with excellent use of bold print, format, and shading. It is a quick and easy read, and major points are highlighted. In the back of the book there is an area for further reading for each chapter that serves as a reference guide. Because this is a British publication, some of the psychiatric services and treatment approaches may differ from those in the United States.
Assessment: This is a useful book for students. It is succinct and instructionally geared toward orienting the student. It is comprehensive and worth getting, though in the U.S. one would do well to keep in mind that the U.K. system may differ in some aspects.
