From The Critics

Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: Since there recent changes in the USMLE, several review books have hit the market for medical students preparing for the examination. This new review book, written by a director of medical student education in psychiatry, will be quite helpful for medical students studying for the USMLE in psychiatry.
Purpose: The purpose is a quick and basic review of the information a clinician must know about psychiatric diagnosis and treatment to be an effective general physician or other mental healthcare professional. The author also states that the book is useful for those who want to know the facts that are most often asked on exams to measure mastery of psychiatric knowledge.
Audience: The intended audience is medical students preparing for the USMLE, although individuals in related fields might benefit from this review.
Features: This 378-page book is divided into five sections: the process of diagnosis, psychiatric disorders, clinical psychopharmacology, psychotherapies, and special issues such as psychiatric emergencies and geriatric patients. It includes USMLE-type questions and explanations and a helpful index.
Assessment: This book will be quite helpful for medical students preparing for the USMLE, if it is used exclusively for that purpose. The book would not be appropriate for the core course in medical school on psychopathology.
