Children's Literature
Maria and her family are planning a trip. They have to decide where to go. They have to decide if they want to go to San Diego or Santa Barbara. The family compares the distances to each place and thinks about what else the city has to offer. Once the family decides they also have to decide in what order they will visit all of the places. They compare distances of each place to make their plan. Next, Juan plans a vacation with his family. They also have two places they would like to visit. Juan's family also compares distances from their home to the vacation spot. When they have decided, they also make a game plan including the order of places they would like to visit based on distance and comparing distances to each place. The author does a good job of explaining distances and which place is farther and which is closer. In a couple instances, the author does not explain why the family chose the place they did. If the author would have described this in more detail, the reader may have understood distances a bit better. The photographs in the book are very clear and go along with what is being explained. This is part of the "Math in our World" series. Reviewer: Rachel Miller
