Children's Literature - Kristin Harris

This is a very traditional format for books that help kids (and adults) learn how to draw. A list of supplies is provided, but almost everyone has what is needed to do simple pencil drawings. The bulk of the book is made up of step-by-step instructions that detail the prescribed progression of marks to make to draw the desired object. A very important technique used by some artists when they draw is to first reduce every object to its most basic geometric components. This step insures that the relative position and scale of the items is correct. A variety of points of view for each of the objects are drawn, such as a front view, a side view, and a 3/4 view. The geometric drawings help detail how these views are accomplished. This expands an artist's versatility. The book includes instructions for drawing motorcycles named Classic Chopper, The Hog, The Dual Rider, The Demon, and The Bike of Tomorrow. Included are a glossary, related book suggestions, and links to internet sites that might be of interest. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
