Synopsis

Hush, little digger, don't say a wordPapa's gonna scoop you a pile of dirt. And if that dirt starts to overflowPapa's gonna find you a red backhoe. There's rough and tumble fun to be had in the sandbox where a father and his little digger construct a larger-than-life world of dump trucks, backhoes, bulldozers, and more.

Children's Literature

Young construction junkies, fans of big machines, and self-proclaimed diggers have their new ballad in this revision of the "Hush Little Baby" lullaby. Each page offers a soothing promise about what version of big rig papa will find for the little digger. Papa appears to have all of his bases covered as he finds machine after machine to satisfy the little digger's obsession: "if that 'dozer springs an oil gusher, / Papa's gonna find you a concrete crusher." White's vivid illustrations of the boy and his papa will delight young readers, while his fun yet true to life depictions of the heavy machinery will make this a favorite read, night after night. Olson-Brown does not shirk away from using real truck terminology (backhoe, front-end loader, auger drill) in her book for young readers, a move that will endear her story to the little diggers as they identify those trucks in the world around them. The big trucks, whimsical illustrations, and quirky lyrics set to a familiar rhythm will please little diggers everywhere.
