If "stinky" is truly one of the words that is adored by the toddler set, then this concept book is sure to appeal. Counting down from ten stinky babies in need of diaper changes to a lapful of dry sleepy babies, the lilting verse and soft rhythm provide the perfect laptime read. Accompanied by illustrations of mostly smiling babies, the story progresses page-by-page through a typical day at Nee Nee's Day Care. Rows of diaper bags wait unobtrusively on a shelf, two of the babies sit in highchairs to share a "soft, warm bun" while a large friendly dog waits for the bits to fall, and the other stinky babies do all the comforting things that make daycare fun. There are just enough eye-catching touches to make the illustrations worth looking at repeatedly, from a thumb-sucker to a diaper that landed on the dog's head to a toddler wearing sunglasses and "reading" her book. Building with blocks, dancing a jiggle jive, and playing peek-a-boo, the babies all look healthy and happy. With its catchy rhymes and simple phrases, this book is both easy and fun to read. The board book version is missing the Velcro tab that held the standard book closed and gave it a diaper-like appearance. Reviewer: Augusta Scattergood
