While there are many sports that receive international attention there are very few that have the grace and technical skill levels required by ice skating. One need only think about figure skaters to understand how much like a prima ballerina so many top level women skaters are. In men's competition, the amount of balance, strength, and artistry that is required to be a competent skater is astonishing. Likewise, those athletes who choose to engage in speed skating have to train at a tremendously high level to maintain the explosive power and endurance necessary to participate in that sport. In Ice Skating Michael Streeter touches upon some of the central tenets involved not only in this fascinating sport but also upon the preparatory steps that successful athletes engage in to continue to excel in this arena. As part of the multiple volume "Sports Injuries" series, Ice Skating follows a format common to the other books in this illustrated set. In this well written book Streeter begins by detailing in brief the history of ice skating. Then the author quickly portrays the physical and mental approaches that top athletes use to prepare for competition and practice. Equipment necessary for safe and effective participation in ice skating as well as vocational applications within this sport are also reviewed. Throughout this valuable resource book the author presents information that is useful, apropos for skaters or potential skaters, and highly readable. This approach makes Ice Skating a book that sports enthusiasts will appreciate and value. 2004, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 9 to 12.
