Several recipes are found throughout the book along with customs associated with various holidays, religious festivals and weddings. Since many Hindus are vegetarians, they do not eat meat. In fact, cows are considered sacred animals. The Sikh communities in the northern part of India and Pakistan celebrate Guru Nanah's birthday. He was born in 1469 and was the first Sikh teacher. To celebrate, men and women from the community take turns reading the Sikh holy book called the Guru Granth Sahib. These and many other facts and tidbits are part of this book in the "Food and Festivals" series.
