Gr 6-9-Two series entries that provide biographical information supplemented by primary-source material. Logical organization, frequent chapter and sub-chapter breaks, and many black-and-white photographs make the books interesting and easy to understand. Both writers use a straightforward writing style and explore the early lives of their subjects as well as the years in which they were involved with their work. These titles are designed to be used for reports, but will attract general readers due to the humanizing focus of the authors, who integrate personal details with the significance of these individuals' careers. Both Goodall and Baldwin's lives included controversy and professional conflict, and these areas are included, although not in great depth. While both books are successful, James Baldwin is more poignant. This may be partly due to the dramatic events in his life, but is also due to Tackach's success in conveying the emotional struggles that Baldwin endured. Well-chosen photos and primary-source materials help develop an understanding of the total man.-Carrol McCarthy, Tower Hill School, Wilmington, DEBook Details
