This 58-word beginner's book provides a basic introduction to jellyfish, those strange ocean-dwelling animals that come in many sizes and colors. It describes the physical characteristics of these creatures and explains how they catch their prey. Simple, slightly larger type accommodates the younger reader, as does the repetition of several words. Although this book is intentionally short to cater to its young audience, it fails to note that some jellyfish species possess stinging tentacles that can harm humans; this omission is made painfully obvious by one photo that depicts a small child snorkeling next to a jellyfish. Perhaps the intent of the book is to portray jellyfish more as interesting marvels of nature rather than creatures to be feared. Nonetheless, this reviewer feels that a short sentence of explanation is necessary. A glossary, a suggested book list, a source for Internet sites, and an index/word list are included.
