This series of biographies of Hispanic people includes names familiar to many because of associations with the arts, sports, history, activism, and the movie or entertainment industry. The format is standard—an introduction to the person uses quotes and pieces of information that are well-know, and these are melded with discussion of the individual's work ethic to show how an obstacle was overcome. The biography of Jennifer Lopez is no different. In an effort to make the movie star seem real, Lopez is referred to by first name whether using indirect quotes or describing events in her life. Readers see many photos of Lopez looking glamorous, although no photos from her early life are provided. While the text describes much about her life in the entertainment field, it also endeavors to show that success followed hard work and disappointment. Chapter titles are catchy, and each chapter is divided into section with subheadings. A timeline and chronology, notes, a bibliography, an index, and suggestions for further reading round out the volume. The series seems ordinary and formulaic, but no doubt will fill a need in areas where there is a demand.
