Editor LeMaster (English and American studies, Baylor Univ.), has culled from six of Stuart's autobiographical works segments that express the down-to-earth educational philosophy of the Appalachian novelist, poet, teacher, and school administrator. The selections from works dating from 1938 to 1970 are arranged in a loose chronology of Stuart's life. Each is accompanied by the editor's commentary and evaluation of the work as a whole. LeMaster has done an admirable job of selecting and editing the readings.
