Children's Literature
Lots of information about Kentucky is packed into short chapters that capture student interest. The flow of information is well developed and paced. In contrast to many informational books packed with facts only, this one invites the reader to marvel and wonder at the world, to be amazed at the smallness of Abraham Lincoln's log cabin home or to imagine pacing through the spooky corridors of the Mammoth Cave. Back matter includes a variety of information of which the fast (and funny) facts and a recipe for fried green tomatoes are the highlights. This book is suitable for both school and public libraries. The section, "Let's Explore Kentucky," would be wonderful reading before a family vacation and would greatly assist in encouraging children to help plan a road trip. 2003, Compass Point Books,β Elisabeth Greenberg

Gr 2-5-This series rivals the "Hello U.S.A." series (Lerner) with its presentation of an abundance of information in an attractive format. Chapters focus on history, government, industry, and famous citizens. Color and black-and-white photos complement the texts. Heinrichs provides an accessible introduction to each state, as well as handy reference material. Each book concludes with a "Did You Know" and "At a Glance" section. State symbols and songs are also included, as well as a native recipe. Suitable choices for any collection.-Carol Fazioli, formerly at The Brearley School, New York City Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.Book Details
