Children's Literature
This basic introduction to kitten care focuses primarily on practical information for new pet owners. Illustrations include color photographs of cats and kittens, both alone and interacting with children. In addition, watercolor paintings of kittens effectively illustrate cats' body language. Sections include discussions of grooming, playtime, litter box training, and visits to the vet, as well as a very brief mention of the importance of neutering. The book does a good job of encouraging prospective pet owners to take their decision to own a cat seriously by pointing out that cats have long life spans and that they can be expensive. Highlighted sidebars include important reference information and helpful lists, such as a list of potential health problems and a list of prohibited foods. Although this guidebook is not as in-depth as owners' manuals aimed at adults, it is a pleasant introduction to these popular family pets. An index and a somewhat limited glossary are appended. Part of the "Pet Care" series. 2004, Crabtree Publishing Company, Ages 8 to 12.βNorah Piehl
