Language and communication are central features of social behaviour. So, it is somewhat surprising that the social psychological study of language, communication and discourse has a relatively short history. ANN WEATHERALL is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. BERNADETTE M. WATSON is an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre for Social Research in Communication at the University of Queensland, Australia. CINDY GALLOIS is Professor of Psychology at The University of Queensland, Australia, and Director of Research in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Science.
