Doody Reviews

Reviewer: Adrienne B. Hancock, PhD (George Washington University)
Description: This basic overview of the components of a language sample also includes guidelines on how to elicit a language sample and intervention techniques used with adolescents.
Purpose: It presents basic concepts of language sampling and intervention for adolescents, rather than young children.
Audience: The intended audience is undergraduate or graduate students in the communication disorders field. It would be best used as a clinical resource, when planning intervention.
Features: This book provides a basic explanation of language development before covering language sampling in four different genres (conversational, narrative, expository, and persuasive) , and intervention. Often, language development in adolescents is unclear. This book provides language milestones for adolescents that are often missing in other books. It is well organized and easy to read and includes charts to help illustrate the author's points. Chapter exercises allow readers to practice language sample analysis, and an answer key appears at the end of the book.
Assessment: This book sets itself apart from other language sampling books by including intervention techniques and chapter exercises. However, compared to other language sampling books, it is not as comprehensive in explaining how to analyze a sample. For a course, it would be better used as supplemental training material.
