Editorials

Reviewer: Patrick J McDonnell, Pharm.D.(Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description: This useful guide highlights the major legal and ethical issues encountered in pharmacy.
Purpose: The book is designed to provide a thorough overview of law and ethics in pharmacy. Written for practitioners in the U.S., it reviews both federal and state laws and regulation in the practice of pharmacy. The book meets the objective of presenting not only the law, but other issues as well that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians encounter in a variety of workplaces.
Audience: It is intended for students in pharmacy programs and certified pharmacy technician programs. It also would be useful for pharmacists who need a review when they are preparing to take federal or state law examinations. The author is a physician and educator in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.
Features: The book is nicely organized with an introduction to law in general, followed by chapters highlighting federal regulations, controlled substances, state regulations, workplace safety law, to list a few of the topics. There is a strong emphasis on critical thinking and decision making with real-life application case studies, self-assessment questions, and very useful appendices. Chapters are formatted to list "FOCUS ON" features within the text, with introductory objectives as well as outlines of each chapter and a glossary of key terms. These features certainly are a benefit for students of pharmacy law.
Assessment: This is a user-friendly book, not only for pharmacy technicians, but also for students of pharmacy and those preparing to take pharmacy law exams. Highlighting its use for pharmacy technicians may make it attractive to programs that train these students, but these laws are definitely applicable to all in the field of pharmacy. Certainly any changes in federal laws will warrant updated editions.
