Children's Literature
This book contains an unusual mixture of fact and fiction. The first half resembles a children's encyclopedia with lots of sidebar text and plenty of explanation for each photo. With each turn of a page, a new topic begins, such as plants, geography, predators and prey or tribes who live in the rain forest. The text for each "chapter" is usually only a couple of paragraphs and the rest of the space on the page is devoted to photos, illustrations and sidebars. The final chapters deal exclusively with environmental issues and conservation efforts. Then the book shifts to fiction mode and retells an ancient myth from the Congo about a couple who live in the trees long enough to transform into monkeys. The book also includes a quiz about the facts and a good glossary. This volume would be a good resource for second grade classrooms learning about the rain forest. 2000, Two-Can Publishing, $4.95.
