Lifelong learning is an explosive policy issue worldwide. Everywhere, governments want to encourage citizens to learn and to apply their learning across the lifespan. Yet nowhere are governments clear on how best to achieve this desirable goal. This book explores the background to this sudden rise of interest among policy-makers, maps existing patterns of participation, and evaluates the measures being developed to promote lifelong learning, assesses the prospects of achieving a viable learning society and refers to evidence gathered in the course of empirical investigations.

John Field is the first Professor of Lifelong Learning in Britain at Warwick University and is recognized as a leading authority in this field. He has lectured widely in the US and elsewhere in the English speaking world.
