Children's Literature

In a familiar format, but reduced in size, readers are supposed to identify items in a picture made up of many small elements. The focus is hearts so this book would be especially appropriate for Valentine's Day. For children who are not yet reading the rebus format will help them try to find the matching item in each scene. The selection of items to go along with each of the hearts does not seem to have any logic—a car, star, snake, birthday cake, ring, chair, and so on. The scenes, of course, offer more items to look at, point to, discuss, name colors, count, and so on, so the utility of the book can certainly be expanded. The closing spread challenges kids to go back and look for other items. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
