Synopsis
Francis de Sales' literary masterpiece Treatise on the Love of God was originally published in 1616, while he was Bishop of Geneva. This modern edition of the treatise preserves de Sales' gentle prose, enthusiasm for God, compassion, and good humor. For all spiritual pilgrims seeking comfort and guidance, the writings of Francis de Sales will offer the assurance that "a deep and satisfying prayer life is not only possible, but within the reach of anyone who will accept what God is forever offering." "It is wonderful to see that (de Sales') spirit lives in this modern edition of the Treatise on the Love of God. . . . It clearly continues to have the power of a profound guide to the love of God." Bernard F. O'Connor, OSFS President, DeSales University

This "mildly modernized" edition presents one of Francis de Sales's masterpieces in an accessible format. The 17th-century Geneva bishop's treatise on God's love has been paraphrased and shortened from 12 long books into 12 short chapters "while attempting to remain true" to the original's "character and...content." Whereas de Sales's "Introduction to the Devout Life" was written for a popular audience and has been translated many times, this book was "geared more toward an educated and experienced readership" and has not been so widely reproduced. De Sales said he wrote the book "for those who want to move beyond elementary spirituality," and some of the concepts it contains are not easy. However, Christian readers who long for deeper devotion as taught by a wise, experienced spiritual guide will delight in this carefully edited book. (Mar.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
