This 106-word book, one of several titles in the publisher's "Desert Animals" series, gives early readers a look at lizards that live in desert regions. The author starts by providing a brief definition of these reptiles and then explains their physical characteristics. She next discusses their desert habitat. The last chapter, titled "What Lizards Do," describes what the reptiles eat, how they catch their prey, and how they can escape predators by camouflaging themselves or by running away. Full-color photographs identify several types of lizards such as the Clark's spiny lizard, the short-horned lizard, and the white-throated savanna monitor. Some kids (and adults) may be grossed out by two photos that depict lizards eating their prey; other youngsters, of course, will think they are cool. This book is especially appropriate for use in the classroom or as a study aid. Teachers or parents may need to help children with some words and show them how to use the informational sections found in the back of the book; these include a glossary, a bibliography, a list of Internet sites, and an index and word list. 2004, Pebble Books/Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 8.
