Children's Literature

With the use of simple text and super action words, Owls gives important information that allows young readers to learn about these unusual night creatures. Did you know that owls not only have night vision, they have acute hearing as well? Most owls have gray, brown, black and white feathers, and they primarily live in the woodlands. Also learn about what these animals eat and how they eat without teeth. Their sleeping habits will be revealed as well. The close-up and clear photographs bring the birds to life on the pages that even binoculars can not always catch. The big round, yellow eyes draw the reader to them. Look at the bottom of the next page to find the name of each bird. See if you can name all eight birds by the end of the book. Do not forget to check the map on page eight and see where these birds live. Townsend did a terrific job of organizing this book. In the front, the reader finds a table of contents that gives quick access to all the cool facts. They can even go on-line to discover more about owls and other kinds of animals. The glossary helps to define any word that is not clear in the text. Even at this price, it is a must in any library. Part of the "Woodland Animals" series. 2004, Capstone Stone Press, Ages 5 to 8.

PreS-Gr 2-Each of these small books features one to three sentences facing a full-page, full-color close-up photo. Basic information about each animal includes what it looks like, where it lives, and what it does. Subject-specific vocabulary is introduced and defined in the glossary, although some words may require additional explanation. Young readers will likely need assistance using the Fact Hound Internet site as well. A small leaf accents the bottom right of each spread, adding a splash of fun to each page. Eye-pleasing titles for collections needing more early reader nonfiction.-Cathie Bashaw Morton, Somers Library, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
