Synopsis

Penned by a renowned naturalist, scientist and TV personality, it explores the fascinating world of insects. Packed with illustrations and full of ``amazing facts'' about moths, butterflies, bees, beetles, ants, spiders and many more of nature's smaller creatures.

Children's Literature

Did you know the world's longest insect is about as long as 2 pencils? In this book, not only will readers learn interesting, odd facts about insects, but also they will gain an appreciation of insects' survival. The first part of the book broadly describes insect characteristics such as sense, sight and metamorphosis. Next, a section of common insect orders such as ants, beetles and bees gives a more specific lifestyle view of each bug. Finally, there is a section on the closely related arthropod, the spider. Not only will kids gain insight into how insects behave, but there are multiple projects and activities relevant to each section that will involve them in observing these creatures. The procedures are easy to follow and use common materials. Illustrations are clear and truly aid in understanding the material. This book would be an excellent addition for a teacher developing an insect unit. Part of the "Looking At" series of books which explore aspects of the natural world.
