School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Series titles with two-page topic treatments, copious full-color photographs, brief descriptions, and color information boxes. Hook looks at the lost cities of Ur, Knossos, Babylon, Troy, Pompeii, Great Zimbabwe, Tikal, etc. Pirotta discusses the tomb of Tutankhamen, the treasures of Ur, Viking burial mounds in England, the lost Dutchman's Mine, legends about pirates, and the recovery of Nazi loot. Each book addresses the history of the mystery, legends, and later discovery or attempts at discovery. In Buried Treasure, a photo caption states that Plum Island "is named after the many plum trees that grow there," but it is actually named for its lush beach plum shrubs. Suggestions for projects and informative Web sites are included. Lost Cities has some sites that are no longer valid but does include good advice on using search engines to locate other Web sites if those listed are no longer available. While the books do not provide enough information for reports, they will attract browsers.-Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, OR Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
