Synopsis

WALL•E IS THE last trash-collecting and trash-condensing robot on Earth. When he encounters EVE, a probe robot sent to evaluate signs of vegetation, his lonely life suddenly changes and he falls in love. Can this robot romance survive? Find out in this Step 2 reader, based on the Disney•Pixar movie, WALL•E.

Children's Literature

At the beginning of this story, Wall-E is a robot who lives all alone on Earth. He spends his days stacking trash but dreams of having a more meaningful life. Even with a metal heart, he wants to fall in love someday, the kind of experience he has watched in the movies. But will he ever meet a friend? Or find love on this desolate planet? One day a spaceship lands and a pretty, shiny robot comes out. It is love at first sight for Wall-E, but this robot is only interested in her work and in getting the job done. Eve is looking for a sign of life on this planet and is unable to find it anywhere. Wall-E, who is thrilled not to be alone anymore, cannot wait to show Eve around the planet. But as soon as Eve sees the planet, she is ready to leave Earth; she has no lasting attachment to Wall-E or to this planet. Wall-E cares for Eve as she sleeps and even accompanies her back on the spaceship. Wall-E follows his love—and eventually teaches Eve what love is. She begins to genuinely care about her robot friend. Eve finally learns about love through Wall-E's caring spirit and actions toward her. Wall-E and Eve return to Earth and discover a new and wonderful life together. In this delightful book, young readers will enjoy reading about Wall-E's latest adventures. The illustrations work well with the story line and Wall-E: Love at First Beep is a good addition to the "Step into Reading" series. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.
