Overview

Bright and bold and truly wonderful, with over 50 answers and questions about the world around us: here's the most unique and fun way ever to introduce children to colors, opposites, animals, the body, clothes, weather, things that go, and much more--all the learning concepts that delight and intrigue young minds. Every page spills over with happy illustrations and fabulous facts that reinforce the basic concepts. Just take a look at the "Shapes" layout, filled with objects that are triangular, rectangular, diamond-like, circular, and square. There are even crescents and stars. Kids can choose from written questions on the shape of sails, eggs, doors, gifts, the moon, kites, and wands. Right opposite, the answers appear, with an illustration of the item. "Things to Do" shows happy party time, reading, shopping, getting dressed, having a bath, and going to bed, while other spreads feature busy people and busy places. Cheerful illustrations with kid-friendly facts pop everywhere, encouraging them to think about and observe their environments. And of course, the wonderful, magical spinner will ensure they never forget what they've learned.

Editorials

Publishers Weekly

Similar to Jay Young's Magic Fact series, his ingenious use of a colorful striped hand in Moira Butterfield's spiral-bound Magic World of Learning, illus. by Sian Tucker, always points to the right answer when placed in the center of a circle on each page. Questions geared to a younger audience occur in 14 categories ranging from "Jobs People Do" and "Shapes" to "The Weather." Bright, thickly painted everyday objects in the borders provide clues. Children's Literature

You might find this creation shelved with children's books or you may find it with games and puzzles. This is a big 11 1/2 by 11 1/2 inch, book-shaped game with pages and a spiral spine inside the heavy cardboard cover, but once the front cover is opened it is all game. The book is marketed in a tight, clear polywrap that must be in place to secure a "magic" pointer, because, if the pointer is lost, the magic is gone. Inside the thick front cover is a round hole with one notch into which the "magic" pointer (shaped like a hand with a pointing finger) must be carefully inserted so that a prong on the pointer fits into the notch. The pointer is then turned in its fitting so the finger points to one of 14 questions in the circle surrounding the pointer. The pointer is then picked up and moved to the opposite page and placed on a mirrored surface in the center of circle of answers where it twirls about to point to the answer. Thus, "What do you wear on your head?" should generate the response, a hat. There are 14 pages of questions and answers. 2001, Big Fish/Sterling, $19.95. Ages 3 to 8. Reviewer:Eleanor Heldrich
