Children's Literature

Brightly colored, with simple (and lackluster) illustrations, this lift-the-flap book features a cast of five characters (a bear, dog, duck, cat, and a little girl, each found in every illustration). The girl looks for each of her friends in turn, finding them on the right hand page under, on, or behind various objects. The final page asks "who's under the blankets" (rather than using the "where" style query found on previous pages) with the little girl replying "peek-a-boo! I see you." It would be preferable if the book followed a rhyme scheme. With only ten pages this would not have been a difficult task. This book is so simple, it seems more appropriate for the two-to-four-year age range than the recommended four-to-eight group, yet it fails to incorporate illustrations or text that would interest either group. Billed as a "clever twist on an old favorite," this book is best described as a bland alternative.
