School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund, has devoted her life to championing children's rights. This riveting, readable biography details many events in her life-visits to Mississippi with Senator Robert Kennedy and others to show them the harsh reality of life for some of America's poorest families; her marriage to one of Kennedy's legal assistants, Peter Edelman; her work and friendship with young lawyer Hillary Rodham; and her many accomplishments in improving the lives of young people in the U.S. The photographs begin with black-and-white family photos and a shot of Robert Kennedy intently listening to a black Mississippian; full-color photos include a scene of Edelman with President Clinton and a beautiful portrait of her hugging a young African American girl. Unfortunately, quotes in the text are not documented, and there is no glossary. Still, it's a powerful biography that should be in most collections.-Eunice Weech, M.L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL
