Description: The role of pharmacists throughout the world is evolving to meet public health demands. As a result, the competency requirements for pharmacists are changing, as are pharmacy school curricula. This NAPLEX review presents 70 pharmacotherapy topics grouped based on disease states and comes with a companion CD with two practice exams.
Purpose: NAPLEX evaluates candidates' knowledge and understanding in modern pharmaceutical care. When a review guide presents pertinent information succinctly, it becomes a valuable tool for these candidates. This guide partially meets the objectives.
Audience: It is intended for NAPLEX candidates, and pharmacy students will find this guide useful. Pharmacy practice faculty and practicing pharmacists have contributed to this guide.
Features: Every chapter begins with an overview of a disease and its treatment and ends with case application questions and takeaway points to reinforce learning objectives. Some chapters include tables and figures to clarify the information. There are about 1,400 case application questions with answers and explanations in the book. In addition, the companion CD has the two practice tests. Although the title claims this book to be a NAPLEX Review Guide, it covers only the pharmacotherapy area. Although the author is aware of NAPLEX competency requirements, the book does not include any topics dealing with basic and administrative sciences. A short chapter on pharmacy math does not seem to be of much use to students. There is a separate chapter on geriatric considerations, but is no separate chapter on pediatrics.
Assessment: This is a resource for candidates preparing for NAPLEX. The case application questions with explanations of the correct answer are definitely helpful to students. The organization and presentation of the materials should help students learn and assess their competencies in pharmacotherapy. This guide, however, is not a comprehensive NAPLEX review, as it does not include basic and administrative science areas. Thus, candidates will need to buy another review guide besides this one to prepare for NAPLEX.
