Gr 7-12-- An authoritative, concise examination of the major medical ethics issues facing society today. Citing famous cases, the authors discuss three general areas--sexual reproduction (genetics, abortion, surrogate mother), organ transplantation, and death (patient's right to refuse treatment, living wills). Other issues, such as experimentation of new treatments (e.g., AIDS) and the question of who should own expensive diagnostic equipment are included. The book's distinguishing factor is the careful consideration of the cost factor on choices made. Insurance plans are discussed and comparisons made about what the money buys. The bibliography contains primarily adult titles, and the accompanying black-and-white photographs are dark and difficult to see. This title updates Medical Ethics (Watts, 1987) by Carl Heintze and is more comprehensive than Medical Dilemmas (Putnam, 1990) by Margaret O. Hyde and Elizabeth H. Forsyth. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NYBook Details
