Doody Review Services

Reviewer:David L. Osborne, PhD(Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center)
Description:This excellent, no-frills approach to physiology concepts is designed to help medical students and other health professions students review the basic concepts associated with physiology for the medical profession. The information is concise, accurate, and timely. Major terms and clinical pearls are highlighted both as bold text and as red triangle associated figures. Clinical examples and test questions are additional features of the text.
Purpose:As defined by the authors, this book is designed to "help medical students efficiently learn and review physiology." These are worthy objectives of any textbook. The authors have produced a no-frills approach to the major concepts of physiology that would be most useful as a review, as there is limited detail in the explanations of the concepts.
Audience:The authors have targeted medical students as the major audience and the book is appropriate for this audience. However, having taught physiology to undergraduate premedical students as well, I think this book would be very useful to students preparing for the MCAT. The unique combination of an experienced physiologist and a young (resident) clinician gives this book a fresh perspective.
Features:The first chapter covers general material such as homeostasis, membrane transport and signaling, and basic muscle physiology. The next eight chapters are organized according to major organ systems. Each presents the basic concepts with clinical correlations along with a small number of study questions and answers. Chapter 10 completes the review with a final exam containing 108 questions that are a mixture of standard multiple-choice and scenario-based multiple-choice questions and accompanying answers. The only missing feature is a detailed glossary that students could use instead of having to turn to a medical dictionary.
Assessment:This high quality, readable book is a condensed alternative to Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 22nd edition (McGraw-Hill, 2005).
