From The Critics
Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD(Southwestern Adventist University)Description: This third edition of Medical-Surgical Nursing in the Springhouse Notes series features learning objectives, highlighted major concepts, points to remember, study questions (with answers in the back), and critical thinking/application exercises (some are redundant) in an outline format.
Purpose: Like other books in this series, this is a learning tool, not a primary information sources. It is an excellent supplement to class and other textbook reading. The major benefit is enhanced understanding and improved test scores, although an unspecified use is as an excellent resource for nursing faculty involved in course content development.
Audience: All nursing students will benefit from using this book as a companion to their text. Any student struggling with test taking, organizational skills, and/or concentration NEEDS this book. Nursing faculty (especially the novice) will want this book for course development and to present reviews. There are good clinical application exercises included. Libraries that support nursing programs will want this among their holdings. The authors (2), advisory board (7), and reviewers (3) are all active in nursing education.
Features: Special information is boxed off with red borders, and the most important text is in red. Topics are arranged strictly by body system. The cover is of an eye-catching color and design. Patient teaching sections, decision trees, clinical alerts, study questions, and several appendixes add education and interest value.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for a variety of readers, including students having trouble with test taking or just getting bogged down in the usual voluminous medical-surgical texts, students reviewing for final exams or state board testing, and faculty (especially the novice) developing course content (setting priorities and providing structure). An additional bonus is a "StudySmart" computer disk of 100 medical-surgical review questions.
