From The Critics
Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD(Southwestern Adventist University)Description: This is a second edition paperback book of multiple choice questions on medical/surgical nursing content. Correct answers are given as well as the rationale for both the correct and incorrect responses.
Purpose: Helping students prepare for the NCLEX is the primary purpose of this review book. Such books are needed and this is certainly a worthy objective. The questions presented provide a through review. Many times a scenario is presented with several questions following. This is not a format used by the NCLEX computer format now.
Audience: The audience is most obviously people preparing to take the NCLEX. Students might use the book to check their understanding of specific medical/surgical content during their course of study. Faculty might review the questions and compare the content with course objectives and classroom content. The editors and contributors are credible.
Features: The questions are presented by body system. Following each set of questions are the answers and rationales. The step of the nursing process, the client's specific type of "need" (such as safety, health promotion, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity), and the taxonomic level are all identified. A few hints are included for test day and taking tests in general. This content is contained in about four pages and could be expanded.
Assessment: I like this book. It is small enough to not overwhelm but comprehensive in the medical/surgical content. The rationales are understandable and the book is referenced. The latest information I have seen on test writing suggests leaving out the scenarios and all extra information like patient names, etc.; just ask the question. I personally think the extras make it more life-like and interesting!
